    Great video, wouldn't creating your own proxy just make them start tracking that IP and tying all actions to you via that IP? If you were to use it constantly. A public proxy wouldn't have this issue since many others will all be using it correct? Same deal with self hosting VPN vs using a service.

    Apple has already been offering this for a while as “Private Relay” which is available with their iCloud+ subscription and it uses Cloudflare exit nodes. The feature set is extremely similar. It does have some use in certain edge cases where the network you are on is either trying to observe or restrict your traffic and you just want a simple solution for browsing. Or you just don’t want to reveal your IP address, or you don’t want your ISP to see your traffic. And for many normals it’s good enough. But as you say, you’re way better off rolling your own because Google and Apple have the potential to watch your traffic.

    This works great (Linode and Shadowsocks). Does anyone know why if you set the Linode (Linux) server config.json to use 80, 443, 8080 it does not work. I assume this is Linode protecting the server??? I tried to use my phone at cafe and they block everything but 443, 80 traffic (I tried 8080 for poops too).

    The explanation of what proxies are used for is a little lacking. It makes it appear as if proxies are just used like a VPN, while most of the time, they are used by businesses that scrape & collect data from the web. Think, OpenAI collects data to train ChatGPT, but having to use multiple IP addresses so they don't get blocked from whatever website they collect the data from.

    What does he mean by "the best of both worlds"(vpn/proxy). When he encrypts data between the proxy and the host, that is pretty much a vpn. He said in the beginning that not encrypting saves resources. I would much rather have liked to see an actual proxy without encryption. This most definitely will be a hit to your bandwidth

    So, my favorite coffee shop is blocking SSH for reasons unknown. At home my laptop can ssh to my server just fine. At the coffee shop, no bueno. I wonder if they're blocking Shadowsocks?

    At work, we do not have access to FB Ebay and others. Have been using Firefox SOCKS 5 proxy for past 15 years thru putty. The 'Run' box has saved Putty Setting like "putty.exe -load "wireguardUS" "

I truly feel like I have a leg up on some of my classmates at school because of the knowledge I've learned from this channel.

    Thanks for the video. Two question, using shadowsocks, Linode allows us to change server location as a VPN service? How difficult is to do all this process using a Linux notebook? in this video you did it in a Windows. Also, I would love Portuguese subtitles in these video so I can send to my Brazilian friends.     A few months ago I noticed Chrome would not allow me to connect to any website or even google service without disabling my VPN.

    All services worked fine on other browsers, so it was just a chrome issue with ERP Proxy Errors, my other PC's I don't use Chrome other than for Google Products, so didn't get any issues, as stated it's clearly not connection related as both use a VPN. This would happen, would not load, you can refresh it a dozen time and it will occasionally then it loads very slowly or only part load. This has gotten worse with the new anti-ad blocking.

    Now, that system being the oldest, I wanted to test a theory, did a fresh install of windows on that system to see if Google was identify my hardware to block connections while a VPN was running. I opened 2 Chrome browsers, Logged into the VPN, Went to Google.
    1st Browser came up with the ERP Proxy Error.
    Disabled the VPN, 2nd Browser went to Google again, loaded no issue.
    Refreshed the 1st Browser, loaded.
    Reconnected the VPN, Refreshed the 2nd Browser which loaded first time without a VPN. ERP Proxy Error.

    Now, it makes no different which location I use or servers I use, the minute I use a VPN google chrome does not seem to like it.
    I tested this is VM with spoofed hardware, for the 1st week no issue with a VPN connect, after that ERP Proxy Error. Changed the hardware again. Same again after 1 week, so it is Google tracking hardware of users.

    At this stage I implemented the same process I have for my other 2 systems. I have 12 Browsers installed, each browser is used for different services, this means the information is more limited on what I shop or search for.
    So things Microsoft related, outlook, bing etc, I use Edge, although rumour is Microsoft are planning to obtain all browser activities, regardless whether you use Edge or not as information is ammunition and they don't care for privacy.
    Amazon, Spotify, Twitter etc, all use a different browser, I spent a lot of time making settings for each browser for each service to ensure it would not have any issues. Auto delete on exit, I don't stay logged in so having a good memory is key here.
    While this limits the issue on the older system and probably is gives me more privacy in the long run, I still have the ERP Proxy issue in Chrome intermittently as I did before.
